Fall 2023 internal communications internship

The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard seeks a current student or recent graduate to assist the Communications team with internal communications for approximately 10 hours per week.

Launched in 2004, the Broad is a biomedical research center located in Cambridge, MA. The institute is dedicated to improving human health by using genomics to advance our understanding of the biology and treatment of human disease, and to help lay the groundwork for a new generation of therapies.

Working with the senior internal communications specialist and other members of the Communications team, the intern will help teams within Broad administration communicate administrative news and advertise special events. They will write original content, edit content created by others, and distribute/curate content for several digital and print channels.

This is an opportunity for an intern interested in internal/employee communications to:

  • Develop creative multi-channel communication campaigns.
  • Problem-solve and experiment with a variety of digital platforms.
  • Gain editing experience.
  • Work among world-class scientists.
  • Collaborate with members of a fast-paced, highly creative Communications team on communications planning, media relations, science writing, social media, and/or video, depending upon interest and the team’s needs.

Duties will include:

  • Writing news-in-brief items for the weekly internal newsletter.
  • Writing, editing, and managing content for the Broad's internal website. 
  • Assisting with coordinating and publicizing Broad Institute-wide events and updates.
  • Creating and managing content for the electronic screens onsite. 
  • Managing listings on the event calendar. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

The ideal candidate will be:

  • An excellent writer who has an understanding of voice, a demonstrated command of grammar and mechanics, and an interest in writing about a variety of administrative topics for a scientific audience.
  • A great listener who asks clients the right questions in order to fully understand their needs and propose appropriate solutions.
  • A strategic thinker.
  • A capable, attentive editor who is comfortable working in different styles.
  • Able to manage multiple competing priorities on deadline.

Finalists will be required to take a writing test.
