There are certain times during the year when you may enroll in benefits or make changes to your benefit selections.

  • Within 30 days of your date of hire, or a change in employment status that makes you eligible for benefits;
  • During the open enrollment period held in the fall of each year, or;
  • Within 30 days of a Qualifying Life Event.

New Employee Eligibility

New full-time and part-time employees scheduled to work more than 20 hours per week are immediately eligible for benefits on their date of hire. New hires have 30 days from their date of hire to complete their enrollment in the benefits program.

Annual Open Enrollment

Broad offers an annual open enrollment period to its benefits-eligible employees in the fall of each year to make benefit plan changes for the upcoming year. Because medical and dental coverage and your contributions to flexible spending accounts are available to you on a pre-tax basis, your contributions are deducted before federal, state, local, and Social Security taxes are withheld, helping to lower your taxable income and offset the cost of your coverage. IRS rules governing pre-tax benefit plan contributions prohibit you from enrolling in, canceling, or making any changes in the level of coverage of your medical, dental, and flexible spending account plans, outside of the annual open enrollment period, unless you have an allowable change (please see Qualifying Life Event below).

Change Benefits / Qualifying Life Event

Outside of Open Enrollment, the only other time you can change benefit elections is if you experience a Qualifying Life Event during the year. Following are examples of a Qualifying Life Events:

  • You gain or lose an eligible dependent due to marriage, birth, adoption, legal separation, divorce, change in custody, change in student status or death;
  • Your own or your spouse’s/domestic partner’s eligibility for employer-sponsored benefits changes due to new employment, termination of employment or reduction of hours worked;
  • The employer-sponsored health care coverage that you or your spouse/domestic partner is eligible to receive changes significantly.

If you do not experience a Qualifying Life Event during the year, your next opportunity to change your benefit elections will be during November for a January 1 effective date. You have 30 days from the date of the Qualifying Life Event to make changes to your benefits.

All benefit changes due to a Qualifying Life Event can be processed through Workday. You will be asked to select the Benefit Event Type, which would be your Qualifying Life Event. In addition, you are required to attach proper documentation for a Qualifying Life Event (marriage certificate, birth certificate, divorce or separation decree, etc.) before benefit changes can take place. Please see chart below for additional information.

Once your changes are submitted in Workday, they will route to the Benefits team for final approval.

Birth/Adoption Birth or Adoption record
Divorce (Removing Dependent) Divorce decree
Gains Other Coverage Letter from other employer or carrier showing gain of coverage
Loses Other Coverage Letter from other employer or carrier showing a loss of coverage
