A happy new year to one and all. In light of a bit of work-life research that dropped late last year, we half expected to be inundated with tidings of recently published papers and other outcomes of a "break" spent with noses to grindstones, but, upon returning to work yesterday, we were pleasantly surprised to find this wasn't the case. Congratulations on an appropriately restful holiday closing. Below, please find brief updates on of-the-moment matters, and look to next week for the return of the chock-full-o'-science BroadCast you know and love:

Steve Hyman explains to Popular Science why we need to understand the mechanisms of psychiatric disease in order to create new classes of drugs. And Geraldine Van der Auwera discusses the interface of life sciences and technology in a Bio-IT World Q&A.
