Single-stream recycling

With single-stream recycling, non-contaminated plastic, paper, glass, and cans are permitted in the blue recycle bins.
In the kitchens and office areas:

  • Food containers must be rinsed well before placing them in the recycle bins.

In the labs:

  • Containers to be recycled should be rinsed, and there should be no contents left.
  • If anything was contaminated with bio-hazardous materials, these items must go into the proper biohazard container (sharps or non-sharps containers).
  • Cardboard boxes should be placed out in the hallways.
  • If your lab needs recycling bins, request them by sending an email to facilities@broadinstitute.org. Remember that these bins are for empty, uncontaminated, and clean recyclables only.

Styrofoam Recycling
Styrofoam can also be recycled. Please use permanent marker to write the word "Trash" on the items that you wish to recycle and place them in the lab corridors.

Styrofoam is collected from the lab corridors on a daily basis. At this time, only hard styrofoam will be collected for recycling (no packing peanuts).

Composting
All office kitchens have a grey bin lined with a green trash bag for Composting. Please use these bins for:

  • bakery, dairy, fruits & veggies, coffee grounds, floral, leaves, and items with the compost logo

Items we can not accept in the composting bins:

  • metal, aluminum foil, plastic of any kind, glass, plastic wrap, staples, styrofoam, wire, wood

Battery recycling
Batteries of all types can be recycled if you bring them to one of the EHS office locations or placed in containers located in all copy rooms.  You can also request that your batteries be picked up by emailing waste@broadinstitute.org.
